Well, it looks like we made it!
While most of the weekend is now a blur, it appears that the Spring Wide Open was a success! While we may have been tested a time or twelve, we made it through. I was blown-away by all of the comments about how well-run and issue-free this event was…because from my end it certainly didn’t feel that way.
While Caleb and I may have been the best (unfortunate-looking) faces of the tournament, we certainly couldn’t have pulled it off if not for our amazing disc golf community. When we needed you, you were there. When we didn’t need you…you were there! When we asked for help, you were quick to respond. And yes, when we didn’t want to hear it…there you were! LOL
I would like to thank our wonderful course providers: Spring Valley DGC, Northside Christian Church, and Windwood Presbyterian Church. Our courses looked wonderful, and very little of that had anything to do with us…they all have wonderful staff and grounds crews!
We couldn’t have even started round 1 if not for the heroic actions of Steve Stanley and Torrin Tompkins. You are heroes.
Chris Vandagriff, thank you for picking up the phone! I had a few unique situations come up and not only were you quick and dependable, but supportive as well! I certainly owe you!
Austin McDaniel was made into a gopher. (As in go-for this and go-for that). Thank you!
Andi Young, among the many other things, I learned that next time I’m in need of a crossing guard, I am calling you! Thank you for keeping the herds of soccer families and our players safe!
Don Young: HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
Sue Mac: Thank you for spotting for us! You helped me find my disc at a Gorilla event so I knew then that you HAD to be a spotter for us!
Our on-site helpers really came in clutch. Casey & Caitlyn Fennell spent the entire day at a single hole, and got a video of EVERY SINGLE DRIVE…hoping to make someones day by getting a $5k/$10K ace on video.
If you get a chance, please send some thoughts/prayers/positive vibes to J.D. Ramirez. He had what could have been a serious injury during round one. Thankfully, while still severe, nothing was broken.
Travis and Synjin Dillard, Lone Star Disc Presents: the Spring Wide Open simply could not have happened without Lone Star Disc, and that can’t happen without YOU! Thank you for supplying our player pack discs, for being such a positive influence on the local disc golf community—and soon—the WORLD! I am proud to be associated with you and your company!
As some of you may have heard, one of our charities is Camp Hope Houston (PTSD Foundation). We had a group of vets come out to the course to get to know our community. Most of them were unaware of disc golf. They all seemed to be very interested and even wanted to get into the tournament! Unfortunately one member had a medical incident which required emergency services. The good news is that he is now okay. But the incident was too much for some of the members, so they didn’t get to stick around to meet most of you.
This is such a fantastic organization, and their cause is as American as it gets: helping those that help guarantee our freedoms. If you get a chance, give them a shoutout on social media, start a fundraiser campaign, or just tell another person about what they do!
Speaking of fantastic organizations… E.D.G.E. is our other charity. They are doing wonderful things by introducing disc golf to students who are in need of physical activity. P.E. budgets get slashed so easily…especially in a day-and-age where most public school students are “learning from home!” E.D.G.E. is needed now more than ever and they are very likely to be the reason that the next-next Paul Mcbeth even gets introduced to the sport!!!
I haven’t finalized the numbers yet, but I believe that we raised enough to make a small, but positive, impact on both of our charities. I will, of course, share the final numbers once I have them.
There are so many names that I haven’t listed. We have received support, inspiration, and friendship from disc golfers around the corner, around the state, and around globe. What other sport does that???
On behalf of Cutthroat Disc Golf, I thank you.
